Four of the eight teams representing the Mid-Central College Conference at the NAIA men's and women's basketball national championships were in action on Wednesday, day one of the seven-day event.
Bethel and Saint Francis each advanced to the Sweet 16 on the men's side in Point Lookout, Mo., while Indiana Wesleyan dominated in the women's tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. The USF women were the lone casualty on the day.
Playing the 2:45 EST time slot, the Pilots overcame a seven point halftime deficit to defeat Friends University (Kan.) 77-67. Bethel moves on to play Embry Riddle (Fla.) on Friday at 9:30 a.m. EST. [Complete Game Recap]
Saint Francis capitalized on late-game heroics to take out Black Hills State (S.D.) 86-83 and advance to the second round. First Team All-Conference selection DeJovaun Sawyer-Davis drilled a three pointer with two seconds remaining to give the Cougars the win. The USF Lady Cougars were the only MCC representative to fall in the first round, but they did not go quietly. With a shot to tie the game, Saint Francis came up two points short in a 67-65 overtime loss to Aquinas (Mich.). [Complete Game Recap]
The Indiana Wesleyan women dominated its first round opponent, Concordia (Neb.), for a convincing 56-42 win. The Wildcats jumped out to a 16-point halftime lead and didn't allow the Bulldogs within 14 for the remainder of the contest. IWU advances to take on Black Hills State (S.D.) at 4:30 EST on Friday.
