The Knights played consistent golf over 54 holes to win their sixth NAIA Region VIII Tournament Championship on Saturday.
Sitting in a tie atop the leaderboard after day one, the Knights needed
consistent play among the lineup to win the crown. They played exactly
as they needed to as they shot a 298 to win the tournament by eight
strokes over Indiana Wesleyan. The title is the second straight for the
Knights as they also earned the crown in 2006.
"I am extremely proud of this team," said head coach John Shelton.
"This group is probably one of the best teams I have ever coached. They
worked so hard this year and it has paid off for them. They are not
only great student-athletes, but also just great guys all together."
Senior Stephen Ford (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central)
led the charge as he took medalist honors after a near-perfect round of
golf on Saturday. The Indianapolis, Ind., native shot a four-under-par
round of 68 to close out the individual championship with an overall
54-hole score of 212 (73-71-68). He won the event by five strokes to
earn All-Region honors.
"Stephen has a legitimate
shot at being in contention at Nationals," said Shelton. "He is the top
player in the region and is just a great guy all around. I am so proud
of him and the entire team for their performance."
