Taylor University athletic director Dr. Angie Fincannon has announced the launch of women's golf, the 16th intercollegiate sport at Taylor, beginning in the fall of 2012. Women's golf will become a championship sport in the Mid-Central College Conference starting with the 2012-13 season.
The program will be led by Cameron Andry. Currently in his first season at the helm of the Taylor men's golf team, Andry will lead both programs next season as a full-time coach and assistant sports information director.
"We believe that we can be successful given Taylor's reputation and the
attraction of golf as a women's sport," Fincannon said. "With the
momentum around the men's team with Coach Andry, we felt like it was a
perfect opportunity to offer women's golf under his leadership."
"I am excited and humbled by the opportunity to lead the launch of the
women's golf program," Andry said. "Building a team and program from the
ground up will offer unique challenges but also great rewards. I am
looking forward to guiding student-athletes through the enriching
opportunity to compete in intercollegiate women's golf while they pursue
a Christ-centered education at Taylor."
The women's golf team, which will feature six to ten student-athletes,
will be the first new program launched by the Taylor athletic department
since the addition of women's soccer in the fall of 1996. The Taylor
University President's Cabinet approved the addition earlier this month,
making women's golf the eighth women's sport offered at the university.
"We've seen for a couple of years that women's golf is emerging as a
competitive sport and we've been looking for opportunities to develop
this program," Fincannon added. "Now that it is becoming a championship
sport in the Mid-Central College Conference, we are hoping to get out in
front of the curve so we can be competitive in the MCC."
The athletic department will begin its search for an assistant coach to
join Andry in leading the program, and Andry will begin recruiting
immediately.
