Kissimmee, Fla. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University
women’s soccer team won the National Christian College Athletic Association
(NCCAA) national championship Monday by defeating Spring Arbor
University 3-2 in overtime.
The Wildcats (21-2-1) earned an
early lead in the second minute as freshman Errika Comerouski was fouled in the
penalty box. E. Comerouski made the ensuing penalty kick to give IWU a 1-0
advantage.
Claire Comerouski made the score 2-0 in the 20th minute. Spring Arbor scored a
goal just before half to cut the lead to 2-1. The Cougars came out strong in
the second half scoring in the 55th minute to even the score at 2-2. The teams
fought to a 2-2 draw to end regulation.
It took just four minutes of overtime for the Wildcats to claim the national
championship. Claire Comerouski scored her second goal of the night from just
outside the penalty box lofting a shot over the Cougar goalkeeper for the
game-winning goal.
IWU sophomore forward Carly Comerouski was named NCCAA National Tournament Most
Outstanding Player and part of the NCCAA All-Tournament team. Wildcats’ Sydney
Bobo, Gretchen Breckner and Claire Comerouski were also named to the NCCAA
All-Tournament team.
This is the third time Spring Arbor and IWU have met in 2007. The Mid-Central
College Conference foes have gone to overtime in all three matches. IWU won
during the regular season off of a golden goal by Sarah Horsch in the overtime
to win 1-0. Spring Arbor tied IWU in the NCCAA Midwest Region final 2-2 but
advanced on penalty kicks (4-1). The Wildcats revenged the regional Monday
night as they claimed the national championship by the score of 3-2 in
overtime.
