Marian College women's soccer provides the true meaning of Christmas.
Members of the Marian College women’s soccer team took time away from their busy academic schedules and their off-season workouts to share the true meaning of Christmas with others on Thursday, December 14.
Five Knights traveled to Seeds of Hope, a halfway house in Indianapolis for chemically-dependent women, and shared the holiday spirit by giving gifts to the women and gifts for their children. The women’s soccer team also provided a traditional holiday dinner consisting of turkey and all the trimmings prepared by Aramark Dining Services.
This is the second consecutive year the Knight women’s soccer program has gone to the home. Juniors Lindsay Espel, Megan Blose, Kayla Brazzell and sophomores Rebecca Hochgesang and Casey Williams shared stories and the holiday spirit with the ladies in the true Franciscan tradition.
“I think this was a great experience for all involved,” said head coach Kurt Guldner. “I think the ladies realized that while they fight and struggle on the field, these women are struggling with something much bigger. It was a good time and I am looking forward to getting more members of the team out next year.”
"It always feels good to do something for others," said junior Lindsay Espel. "But, visiting the Seeds of Hope house always feels different because these women are trying to turn their lives completely around and start over. Throwing them a Christmas party and helping them through the holidays helps them succeed. That is more than I can ask for."
"One thing I learned last night is that it is easier to accomplish something when you have a team by your side supporting you. As being a member of the Marian College women's soccer team, I know the only way for us to succeed is to work as a team and by our fans supporting and cheering us on. In a way, the Seeds of Hope house is very similar. These women work as a team to succeed and accomplish their goals and we want them to know we are the fans cheering them on."
