KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Even several weeks after the season ended, the honors keep coming for the Goshen College volleyball program and sophomore Peni Acayo.
As the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national championship wrapped up this weekend in Kansas City, the All American Teams were announced. Sophomore Peni Acayo (Kampala, Uganda) was one of 36 players from nearly 300 institutions across the United States and Canada that to be given Honorable Mention recognition.Just weeks after being named First-Team All Mid-Central College Conference, Acayo has also been selected by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as part of the 2008 AVCA NAIA All Mideast Region Team.
"Peni is definitely worthy of the honors," said head coach Jewel Lehman. "She is such a talented player as anyone can see from watching her play. When she is on, she is unstoppable at the net."
The 5-foot, 9-inch sophomore led the Maple Leafs in kills (420), kills per game (3.75), attacking percentage (28.5%), service aces (69), solo blocks (29), assisted blocks (47), and total blocks (76) as a literal one-woman wrecking crew.
Just two years into her collegiate career, Acayo already ranks in the program's top 10 in kills with 873. Her outstanding sophomore campaign comes on the heels of a freshman season which saw her garnish MCC and NAIA Region VIII Freshman of the Year honors.
This season, as a sophomore, Acayo ranked in the top 15 in the country in service aces with 0.6 a game. Her total of 69 - largely from a deadly jump serve - ranks fourth all-time at Goshen for a single season. She also already boasts two of the top six all-time seasons in kills per game in Maple Leaf history.
