KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Zach Coverstone of Indiana Wesleyan University was named the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Coverstone is the first honoree of the 2009-10 season based on his performances from Dec. 28 - Jan. 3. He was chosen out of a pool of player of the week selections among 16 conferences and independents.
Coverstone, a 6-9 senior center from Columbia City, Ind., averaged 23.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists as Indiana Wesleyan won the Notre Dame (Ohio) Tournament on Dec. 29-30. He shot 20-for-32 (.625) from the floor and was 7-of-10 (.700) from the charity stripe in the two-game span.
In the 74-46 win over the University of Toronto, Coverstone went for 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds. He was an integral part in a first-half comeback. With his team trailing by four points, Coverstone pumped in six points during a 17-6 run. From that point, the Wildcats never trailed.
In the 92-76 tournament championship win over No. 15 Siena Heights (Mich.), he finished with a game-high 27 points and 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the year. He added eight assists and two steals to help Indiana Wesleyan to its second-straight NAIA win over a Top 25 team.
Coverstone ranks sixth nationally in the NAIA in blocks per game (2.1) and 21st in rebounding (9.1).
