MARION, Ind. -- With a free throw in the first half of action against visiting Spring Arbor (Mich.) University on Thursday night Indiana Wesleyan University junior forward Elaine Hessel joined the 1,000-point club.

Hessel went on to score a game-high 17 points as the Wildcats dominated the Cougars 70-25 to improve to 15-3 on the season and 4-0 in the Mid-Central College Conference.

The Plymouth, Indiana native has done a bulk of her scoring last season as a sophomore and the first half of her junior season in 2009-10. Hessel has scored 912 points in the last season and a half after seeing limited playing time as a freshman, when she scored 98 points.

Last season, Hessel led the Wildcats at 16.4 points per game and this season has improved to 19.6 points, good for ninth in NAIA Division II.

Hessel has produced quite a few big scoring games during her career, including 22 games with 20 or more points and three contests with at least 30 points. She tallied a career high 35 points against Marian (Ind.) College on February 14, 2009.

So far in her career, Hessel has been honored as a NAIA All-American Honorable Mention, MCC All-Conference Second Team, NAIA Division II National Player of the Week and six MCC Player of the Week selections.

To date this season, Hessel is averaging 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and is shooting 63.8-percent from the field.

No. 8-ranked Indiana Wesleyan will next play at 1p.m. on Saturday, January 9 as the Wildcats travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana for a MCC showdown with No. 23 University of Saint Francis.
