Former Taylor basketball players Jim Bushur ('89) and Jay Teagle ('90) are two of 18 men named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's 2010 Silver Anniversary Team.
Players were chosen to the team based on their accomplishments as high school seniors 25 years ago. Community contributions and collegiate success were also factors in the selection process.
Bushur, Taylor's all-time leading scorer, played his high school basketball at Southport High School under Bill Springer. The Indianapolis native finished his Taylor career with 2,213 points and the single season record for 3-point field goal percentage (.523). An NAIA All-American and NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 1989, Bushur is a Professor of Historical Theology at Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Ind. He is currently completing his Ph.D. at the University of Durham, UK.
"Jim was a special talent for us," Taylor head coach Paul Patterson said. "In 1989 he was the only senior on the team, and he led us to the national tournament. They don't come much brighter than Jim. Obviously he is the kind of person that truly was a student-athlete."
Teagle, who is third on the Trojans' all-time rebounding charts, prepped at nearby Marion High School and transferred to Taylor from Illinois State. Before arriving at Taylor, Teagle was named an Indiana All-Star after leading Marion to an undefeated state championship season in 1985 under then head coach Bill Green.
"Jay played on two national tournament teams, and he was a major contributor for us," Patterson said. "All four years he led us in rebounding, and was really an integral part of those championship teams. He went on to be a very effective high school coach."
The pair played together on Taylor's 1987 team that advanced to the Sweet 16 at the NAIA National Tournament. The two also joined forces to make a final national tournament appearance in 1989, capping three District 21 titles in a four-year span as well as each winning over 100 career games.
The Silver Anniversary Team will be honored at the Hall of Fame's annual banquet on March 24 at the Primo Banquet Hall on the Southside.
