KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Bessie Jenkins of Saint Francis has been named the final NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Player of the Week for the 2009-10 season, the national office announced Tuesday. Jenkins was selected based on her performances from Feb. 15 - 21 and was chosen out of a pool of conference player of the week selections among 15 conferences.
 
Jenkins, a 5-11 senior guard, scored 20 points in the second half against then-No. 17 Huntington to help the No. 12 Cougars turn a 12-point deficit into a 71-65 victory on Feb. 17. With 10 minutes to play, Jenkins was a game-changer, converting 14 consecutive free throws. She finished the game with 33 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the floor and 3-of-5 from 3-point land.
 
Jenkins followed up with a 26 point, 11 rebound performance in a 79-71 win over then-No. 24 Bethel on Feb. 20. Of her 26 points, 18 of them came in the second half to again bring the Cougars back from a 39-36 halftime deficit.

A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., Jenkins is averaging 14.9 ppg and is shooting 49.4 percent in her final campaign as a Cougar. From the charity stripe, where she clinched the win over Huntington, she is firing at 77.4 percent.
