And then there were three...Heading into the Elite Eight of the men's and women's NAIA basketball championships, three MCC representatives advanced on the third day of competition.
Saint Francis and Indiana Wesleyan move on for the men in Point Lookout, Mo., while the Lady Wildcats are still alive in Sioux City, Iowa. Spring Arbor and Bethel both bowed out on the men's side.
The Lady Wildcats won yet another defensive battle topping Black Hills State 58-50 for their first trip to the Elight Eight since the 2007 National Championship season. It's the programs third appearance in the quarterfinals. Junior Elaine Hessel led all scorers with 22 points including 10-10 from the foul line. IWU will play at 7 p.m. EST on Saturday. [

In the debut game of the men's Sweet Sixteen Bethel dominated eighth-seeded Embry Riddle early opening up a 33-19 halftime advantage. The Eagles came storming back in the second stanza, however, taking the lead in the final minute of regulation. Bethel senior Tony Benford drilled a three-pointer in the waning seconds to send the game to overtime where the game continued neck-and-neck. The Pilots could not repeat the magic in the final 21 seconds though and fell 67-64. [

Two games later unseeded Spring Arbor appeared to have No. 5 Indiana University Southeast on the ropes leading by as much as 10 in the second half. The Grenadiers closed the game on an 18-6 run to stifle the upset-minded Cougars and take the 58-54 win. [

If the day began gloomy for the MCC, the tide turned during back-to-back games in the night session. Saint Francis opened up a 41-30 halftime advantage on second-seeded Oregon Tech before holding of the Owls behind Qadr Owens' 22 points. The Cougars advance to the round of eight on Saturday at 7 p.m. EST. [

The Indiana Wesleyan men followed it up with a 13-point win over Eastern Oregon. The Wildcats trailed by two at the half but used the contributions of four players in double figures for a 70-57 final. IWU will play at 9 p.m. EST on Saturday. [
