The Taylor baseball record books will need another major overhaul this offseason.
The Trojans made history once again Tuesday afternoon with the program's first ever outright Mid-Central College Conference regular season championship. They accomplished the feat by defeating Bethel 5-1 and 14-3.
Taylor moves to 34-11 overall and 17-3 in conference play. Bethel falls to 21-22 overall and 13-7 in the MCC.
With the wins, Taylor also secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming MCC Tournament, where they defeated Bethel in the championship game last season to advance to the school's first NAIA National Tournament since 1969.
Adding to the mystique of the championship today was the fact that it was the final home game for seven Taylor seniors who rewrote another page in the Trojan baseball annals. With the game two victory, the group became the all-time winningest class in Taylor baseball history with 124 victories."Last year's seniors challenged this current group at our banquet last year to break the four-year wins record," Taylor head coach Kyle Gould said, "and they really took that to heart. They knew what they had to do, played with a lot of urgency, and it was great to get this done at home."
To get there the seniors put their faith in a pair of sophomores on the mound Tuesday, as Travis Carsten (9-1) handcuffed the Pilots to win the opener followed by a game two victory for Travis Tomaszewski (6-0).
"Travis [Carsten] hasn't had a bad start for us all year and he was great again today," Gould said. "He had good life on his fastball and he was throwing three pitches for a strike whenever he wanted. The thing I was happiest about was he really gutted that sixth inning out."
In the opening game, Jordan Coffey started the offense for the Trojans in the second inning with a double to right field. The freshman eventually scored on a passed ball to make it 1-0, a score that held until the fifth inning.
Derek Kinzer led off the fifth with a bunt single and then came around to score on a Taylor Luna sacrifice fly. Michael Kraynak hit a smash past the shortstop for his second hit of the game to score Nate Hillery from second. The most damage was done when Ryne Otis doubled to deep left center and drove in two more runs that gave Taylor a 5-0 lead.
Carsten gave up three straight hits with one out in the sixth inning, but handled damage control as the Pilots plated only one run.
Kraynak came on to pitch the seventh inning for the Trojans, giving up just one hit to seal the win.
In game two, Bethel struck first with a one-run first inning, but the Taylor offense erupted to score three runs in the bottom half of the inning and six more in the second inning to take a 9-1 lead.
The Pilots attempted to close the gap in the fourth inning when they scored two more runs on four hits, but that was all they could muster.
Despite collecting just one hit in the sixth inning, Taylor drew three walks and took advantage of two Bethel errors to score five more runs with 14-3 showing on the scoreboard.
Needing just three outs to lock down the run-rule victory and the championship, Zach Vander Laan retired the final three batters he faced as the game ended when left fielder Ethan Houts squeezed the final out on a line drive by Reid Spitaels.
Luna went 4-for-4 at the plate and was joined by Otis to lead the Trojans in run production with three RBIs each. Taylor's offensive outburst was achieved without an extra-base hit.
Jordan Coffey extended his hit streak to eight games after going 3-for-5 in the two games combined.
Taylor will travel to Bethel this Thursday for the final games of the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
