Crystal Driver (Junior/Indianapolis-Ben Davis HS) was named to the All-Conference Volleyball team. Driver led the Lady Knights in kills per game with 3.8 kills and was the go-to player in tough situations. In the final match of the year, Driver recorded an incredible 31 kills in 4 games, an average of nearly 8 kills per game. Sophomore Adrienne Freiburger (Sophomore/Ft Wayne Dwenger HS) was named to the All-Conference 2nd team as was Senior Julie Tolin (Indianapolis Roncalli HS). 11/15/02 Goshen College won the rubber game of the season, defeating the Lady Knights 3-1, despite 31 kills by Crystal Driver. The loss ends Marian's season as Goshen advances in the MCC Tourney. Marian ends the season at 13-20. 11/11/02 The Lady Knights will host Goshen College in the first round of the MCC Volleyball Tournament on Thursday November 14th. Game time is 7:30. Marian split the 2 meetings with the Maple Leafs, with each team winning on their home court. After the first round of the tournament, the remaining 4 teams will meet at Indiana Wesleyan University for the semi-finals and final games of the MCC tournament. The winner will advance to the NAIA Region VIII tournament 11/5/02 The seniors came through on Senior Night, leading the Marian Lady Knights to a 30-17, 30-26, 30-8 victory over MCC rival Grace College. Senior Kristin Slaton led Marian with 14 kills in the Match. Senior Julie Tolin, playing the Libero, record 13 digs and had 16 serve receptions. The Lady Knights improved to 13-19, 4-3 on the season. They will wait for the outcome of St Francis/Goshen match to see where and who they meet in the MCC Tournament. That begins Thursday Nov 14 at 7:30. 10/31/02 The Lady Knights hosted Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday night in a match that would likely decide the MCC title. The 22nd ranked Wildcats jumped out early and took the first game 30-22. But Marian came right back and dominated games 2 and 3 to hold the lead at 2 games to 1. But the Wildcats showed their strength as they out-muscled the Lady Knights 30-21 and 15-8. Matthews led the Lady Knights with 16 kills while Driver added 15 and Kathy Kristofek chipped in 12 kills. Katie Ochs had 10 blocks on the night. The loss dropped Marian to 3-3 in the conference and 12-18 overall. Marian travels to #33 ranked IU Southeast on Saturday, and then host Grace College next Tuesday for the final MCC match-up before the conference tournament. Game time is 7:30. 10/27/02 The Volleyball team won two matches in their recent tri-match. They defeated Huntington College and Lindsay Wilson on Saturday afternoon. Crystal Driver led the Lady Knights against the Foresters by recording 16 kills in the 4 game win. Freshman Katie Ochs came through with 7 blocks, 4 which were solo block. Marian dropped the first game 30-22 falling behind early. But they rebounded to take match 30-23, 30-26, 30-25. In the next match, Marian again was down early to Lindsay Wilson College 14-6. But Marian battled back and took the lead at 30-29 and won 31-29. They won the next 2 games 30-28, 30-25. Driver again led the netters with 14 kills and Katie Matthews recorded 13. Jacquie Ritchie led the team in blocking with 7 blocks. 10/20/02 VOLLEYBALL PLAYS UNEVEN IN TAYLOR TOURNAMENT The Lady Knights played a little uneven in the Taylor/Sprint Fall Invitational. In the Friday session, they defeated Trevecca Nazarene 21-30, 30-19, 30-26, 30-15, then losing to Michigan-Dearborn 26-30, 27-30, 30-23, 30-26, 13-15. Against Trevecca, Crystal Driver led the Marian in with 14 kills. Kala Silvers, playing as the Libero, recorded a team high 19 digs. The team was able to score 11 service aces in the match. In the match with Michigan Dearborn, Driver again led the Lady Knights in hitting with 17 kills. Jacquie Ritchie had 9 kills and 4 blocks. In the Saturday match-ups, St Xavier took the Lady Knights in 3 games, 30-27, 30-24, 30-19. Driver had 14 kills in the match. In perhaps the closest match of the season, Marian lost to Spalding 30-22, 30-26, 28-30, 41-43, 12-15. Driver and Katie Matthews each had 17 kills and Ritchie had 10 kills and 4 blocks. Ritchie was named to the All-Tournament team. Marian now stands at 10-16 on the season. They will travel to St Francis on Wednesday night for another MCC match-up. 10/15/02 GOSHEN DEFEATS LADY KNIGHTS IN 5Goshen avenged and earlier loss and defeated the Lady Knights 28-30, 26-30, 32-30, 30-23, 10-15. The loss drops Marian to a tie for first place with Indiana Wesleyan and Taylor. Crystal Driver record 26 kills in the loss while Katie Matthews had 22 kills. Marian is now 9-13 and 3-1 in the MCC. 10/14/02 MATTHEWS NAMED NAIA REGIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEKKatie Matthews was named NAIA Region 8 Player of the Week. Matthews led the Lady Knights to a 3-1 win over Huntington with 21 kills, 9 aces and 16 digs. In the crucial game 4, Matthews served 9 straight points as Marian came back to win the game 30-22. Marian is currently in 1st place in the MCC with a 3-0 record. They will travel to Goshen College for a MCC match tomorrow night. 10/10/02 LADY KNIGHTS DEFEAT HUNTINGTON; REMAIN IN FIRST

9/25/02 VOLLEYBALL UPSETS NATIONALLY RANKED TAYLOR UNIVERSITYIn a huge victory in the Mid-Central College Conference, the Lady Knight upset Taylor University 23-30, 30-27, 30-28, 28-30, 15-12. Katie Matthews (Jr/Fishers) led the Knights with 21 kills and Crystal Driver (Jr/Indianapolis) added 18 kills. Service aces were the rule as Marian totaled 11 aces, getting a match high 5 from Matthews. The win improves the Knights to 5-8 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. Driver was named Mid-Central College Conference Player of the Week for the week ending 9/21. Driver had 51 kills for the week. 9/21/02 VOLLEYBALL WIN 2 IN TRI-MATCH In a very exciting match, the Lady Knights fell to Franklin College 30-24, 28-30, 30-26, 30-26. Highlights of the match includes Katie Matthews with 15 kills, Crystal Driver with 14 kills and 6 blocks and Adrienne Frieberger with 21 digs. The Lady Knights will be in action on Saturday with a Tri-Match with Hanover and Goshen. Action begins at 11:00 AM. VOLLEYBALL YOUNG, HOPEFUL FOR SEASON For Coach Dan Findley, looking to the 2002 season is one full of hopes. He returns 4 of his 6 starters from last season and returns another from the 2000 year. Returning from last season squad will be hitters Kristin Slaton, Crystal Driver, Katie Matthews and Kathy Kristofek. Kristofek's freshman year was slowed by a chronic knee injury, but returns to 100%. Also returning will be setters Kelly Kirkling and Adrienne Freiberger along with defensive specialist Julie Tolin. Jacquie Ritchie returns to the volleyball after sitting out last season. Her return adds depth to the middle position. |
